2D and 3D Workshops

In the first unit of work at college I have been experimenting and expanding my knowledge and understanding of 2D and 3D materials and the techniques and processes that go with them.

3D
In the 3D workshops I worked on making letter nets (I chose the letter 'F') out of materials such
as paper, two different types of card, wood and two different types of clay.
The process for all of these materials were fairly similar other than with materials like clay it wasn't as simple to just draw out the net. When using paper first it was easy as once the net was drawn and cut out it was easy to just fold all of the tabs etc. With all of the other materials the net was drawn out but then using the right equipment (eg. Stanley knife..band saw...clay knife.) each separate section was cut out and then the 'net' was built up together with the right bond. I found most of the processes were relatively easy once I had learnt what the right techniques were when using the materials. I enjoyed working with the clay as at school it wasn't something that we did very often but because of that I didn't know the best ways to work with clay and it was difficult at first to get the shape of the net perfect , the end result wasn't perfect but I learnt how to make it better for the future by working with the clay. Just like with the wood it was something I had done at school but not for long and I wasn't ever confident using the machines.Working with the wood I found it easy to cut the 'net' out using the band saw but when it came to making my letter it took forever for the glue to stick and dry so my 'F' ended up not being perfectly finished. I did enjoy working with one of the card, it was a regular grey card and once I had gotten used to using the Stanley knife to cut out the net I found it was a simple process to 'build' using glue.
Overall with the 3D work I enjoyed some parts of making the nets but found it sometimes hard and also frustrating to cut and glue to get everything finished !
All of my letter 'F' samples. Paper, two different cards, two different clays and wood.

2D
In the 2D workshops I worked on portraits by experimenting with drawing exercises, wire drawing, colour theory and collage. I enjoyed working on all of these especially the drawing exercises and colour theory work. With the colour theory work I painted my own colour wheel showing the primary colour, secondary colours and tertiary colours, also practising making tints, shades and tones. I also created my own versions of paintings based on the artists we looked at.I really enjoyed this work because i like working with colour and paints and I learnt how to make tints etc. I like the drawing exercises because at school it was mainly drawing that I did so I was comfortable with working pencil to paper and found my skills progressed by doing the timed drawings. I did enjoy the collage and wire drawing but found that it wasn't as easy, for example when making a collage based on the work of Chuck Close it took a long time to finish as I had to find the right colours to make up the portrait of myself and the wire drawing was quite difficult as the wire had to be stuck down with masking tape so the shape of the face would hold. Also the wire would often get tangled, but I think in the end all of the work I produced from the workshops turned out well and I enjoyed working on this unit.
this is a chart of shades, tints and tones that I had in my book when we were looking at colour theory.
I don't have my unit 2 sketchbook at hand as it was left with college so I can't take any pictures of my sketchbook to put on my blog.

Have a nice day ! :)
